FM LE: Functional MobilizationTM Lower Extremities
2.5 days 20 contact hours
Prerequisites: FM I and PNF I

Course Overview
This course will train the participant to evaluate and treat mechanical, neuromuscular and motor control dysfunctions of the lower extremities including hip, knee, foot, ankle, lower limb neural tension, and lower extremity PNF patterns.

Required Pre-Course Preparation Work
Prior to the classroom portion of this course, all students must complete required course preparation.  The preparation may include reading, video and quizzes.  Plan to spend approximately 1.5 hours learning this important information.  Once enrolled in a course, required pre-course preparation work can be found by logging on to your IPA account and selecting "My Upcoming Courses."  If you have any trouble accessing the required pre-course preparation work please call our office at 970-870-9521 for assistance. Note: iPads and iPhones do not support flash which is required for the quiz portions of the pre-course work. Videos are viewable on iPads and iPhones, but a computer will be needed to complete any quiz.

Required Equipment:  All participants should bring:

Half Foam Roll (12" x 6" which measures 3" tall at the apex since the 6" round is cut in half) to use during the course.  You may order one from IPA or from a number of other providers.  Orders that are received three weeks prior to a course, and clearly request shipment to a course, may be shipped directly to the course.  All other orders will be shipped to the address given on the order.  Order Half Foam Roll

8 ft Mobilization Belt.  1.5" x 8' mobilization belt.  You may order one from IPA or from a number of other providers.  Orders that are received three weeks prior to a course, and clearly request shipment to a course, may be shipped directly to the course.  All other orders will be shipped to the address given on the order.  Order Mobilization Belt

Supplies are shipped 2-3 weeks prior to the course.  Orders placed after the supplies have shipped will incur a fee to expedite your order, and may include charges for faster shipping.

Recommended Reading

Illustrated Anatomy Book.  It is recommended that each participant bring an illustrated anatomy book, or an electronic anatomy book app, to the course.  We recommend Netter FH. Atlas of Human Anatomy.  East Hanover, MNJ.  Novartis 1977.  Online anatomy applications work well if you have a way to access them during the course.  Other illustrated anatomy books are acceptable.  Atlas of Human Anatomy books may be ordered on Amazon.com or www.us.elsevierhealth.com/netter/

It is recommended that each participant reviews the Bibliography and read any article they are unfamiliar with prior to the course.

Therapeutic Exercises for Spinal Segmental Stabilization in Low Back Pain. Richardson, Carolyn; Jull, Gwedolyn; Hodges, Paul; and Hides, Julie. United Kingdom:  Churchill Livingstone, 2nd edition.

Approach Description

This approach developed and taught by Gregory S. Johnson, PT, FFFMT, FAAOMPT, presents the dynamic principles and procedures of Functional MobilizationTM as an evaluation and treatment component of the Functional Manual Therapy® treatment model. Functional MobilizationTM couples active and resisted movement (PNF) with soft tissue and joint mobilization to facilitate normalization of mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control dysfunctions. The participant is trained to evaluate each movement segment through the use of PNF patterns and to combine the selective pattern into the full trunk and extremity patterns. Instruction will emphasize the treatment of both hypomobile structures and the stabilization of hypermobile segments with prolonged holds to promote activation of the core muscle’s contraction.

Objectives
Develop specific Functional Mobilization™ progression strategies to enhance functional capacity of the lower extremities.

Develop competence in the assessment and treatment of focus areas: hips, knees, ankles, and feet.

Develop home exercises to augment the FM treatment strategies

Dynamically incorporate passive, active, and resisted associated movements with joint and soft tissue mobilization integrated with functional neuromuscular training.

Develop strategic evaluation and treatment skills to enhance regional interdependence of the lower extremities.

Discuss the evidence for the FMLE material.

Instructor Note
The instructors advertised for the course are the intended instructors.  The final number of instructors will be determined by course enrollment.  Every effort is made to hold the course with the scheduled instructors.  Course refunds or transfers will not be granted based on a change of instructors.  Please note there may be instructor changes without prior notice.  Multiple instructors are scheduled for each course.  However, the actual number of instructors at a course will be determined by final enrollment.
