MISSION STATEMENTS

THE INSTITUTE OF PHYSICAL ART

The Institute of Physical Art, established in 1978, offers post professional continuing education courses for physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and occupational therapists, as well as certification and fellowship programs.  The curriculum focus is on Functional Manual Therapy (FMT) and Movement Reeducation.  It is our philosophy that, through the completion of a comprehensive and cohesive series of integrated continuing education courses, certification residency and fellowship programs physical therapists can achieve a greater level of clinical competence.

JOHNSON AND JOHNSON PHYSICAL THERAPY

Johnson and Johnson Physical Therapy (a Functional Manual Therapy Clinic) is an educational facility providing education for advanced fellows of the FMT process and for physical therapy students interested in orthopedic manual therapy.  The clinic is committed to providing specialized care for individuals suffering from chronic and acute pain, complex sports-related injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, and neurological disorders.  This care is provided in a supportive and encouraging environment.  The emphasis of care is Functional Manual Therapy, which includes Functional Mobilization, soft tissue and joint mobilization, back education, and individualized exercise programs.

FMT FELLOWSHIP

The Institute of Physical Art and Johnson and Johnson Physical Therapy believe that one-on-one clinical mentorship is the most effective method of developing, refining, reinforcing and assessing advanced manual therapy clinical skills.  The purpose of the FMT Fellowship is to provide an intensely mentored onto to three year on-site or flexible clinical fellowship in orthopedic functional manual therapy for experienced physical therapists who have obtained CFMT designation from the Institute of Physical Art's Functional Manual Therapy certification program to accelerate their training.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE CFMT FELLOWSHIP

The goal of the FMT Fellowship is to produce master clinicians who demonstrate superior clinical skills and advanced knowledge in orthopedic functional manual therapy, to enhance and further develop advanced skills for the management of complex pain, orthopedic, sports, and neurological patients and to promote the evidence influenced art of Physical Therapy as a primary care option for musculoskeletal and neurological pathologies.  The objective is to produce advanced clinicians who will effectively serve as care providers, consultants, ambassadors, and educators of their peers, patients, medical professionals, and community.

The overall performance objectives of the FMT Fellowship are to accelerate and refine the Fellow's skills in patient evaluation, patient treatment, problem solving, and clinical reasoning, with a focus on the Functional Manual Therapy approach.  The FMT Fellowship includes advanced training in joint, soft tissue, visceral, dural, and neuro/vascular dynamics, as well as state of the art neuromuscular and motor control rehabilitation.  Content includes training in the use of Functional Manipulation and percussion procedures for all articulations.

The FMT Fellowship seeks to meet these goals and objectives by providing a structured, supportive environment for advanced training in and extensive clinical practice of orthopedic manual therapy.  Within this setting, intensive mentorship is utilized as a primary and essential aspect of developing advanced clinical skill.

CFMT REQUIREMENT

  • The curriculum is an extension of the total curriculum of the Functional Manual Therapy Certification (CFMT) program.
  • This certification program includes core courses from the IPA (6 core and 2 optional courses) and Integrated Manual Therapy Services (IMTS) (2 courses).
  • CFMT testing is one of the most demanding for any certification process including extensive written and oral/practical components.
  • Both the fellowship curriculum and the course materials of the required CFMT courses are continually reviewed and modified to reflect the latest advances in clinical and scientific knowledge.
  • One of the founding goals of this total program is to progress towards a completely functional, logical, and evidence-supported curriculum.

CURRICULUM ORGANIZATION

  • Meets the requirements for recognition by the AAOMPT and for Certification by the APTA.  Over 1000 hours of combined didactic and clinical practice hours within the one-year fellowship time frame.  In excess of 400 hours of supervised patient care and 150 plus hours of one-on-one time with faculty.
  • The curriculum has been developed in accordance with the published Guidelines for Curriculum Development for Post Professional Residencies in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (2001) and the Description of Advanced Clinical Practice-OMPT (1998).  The curriculum conforms to the Orthopedic Description of Specialty Practice (2002) published by the Orthopedic Section of the APTA.
  • Focus on developing advanced evaluation and treatment skills.
  • Includes both one-on-one instruction and self directed study in specific areas of scientific principles and research which influences and enhances the fellow's understanding and application of Functional Manual Therapy and manual therapy techniques.
  • Mentoring of clinical application of Functional Manual and Orthopedic Manual Therapy skills.
  • Training in the recognized standards of professional behavior and ethics.
  • Weekly in-services for treatment of complex patients and training in advanced tools of Functional Manual Therapy.

  • Joint mobilization - Advanced functional mobilization techniques emphasized.  Also included is training in the proper use of various assistive devices to facilitate the mobilization process.  All mobilizations are followed by motor reeducation using the principles of PNF.
  • Joint manipulation - The fellow receives intense, one-on-one instruction and mentoring in advanced manipulative techniques (grade V).  Emphasis is placed upon training the fellow to accurately assess and determine the appropriateness of manipulative procedures for a patient, and to identify any possible medical contraindication.  The training of manipulation is carefully monitored and progresses from peripheral to spinal according to each fellow's mastery of the required skills and abilities.  Multiple different types of passive, active, resisted, and device-assisted manipulations are taught.  This includes cranial sutures and TMJ management.
  • Neuromuscular reeducation and motor training - The fellow receives training in advanced uses of PNF for neuromuscular reeducation, evaluation, and strengthening, following a functionally developmental approach for core muscle facilitation and motor control training.  This includes vestibular testing and treatment.  At times there are opportunities for the fellow to manage a neurological patient utilizing the principals of PNF and functional manual therapy.
