It is our philosophy that, through a series of integrated continuing education courses, physical therapists can achieve a level of clinical competence. This competence should reflect both the system in which they train as well as their own creativity in applying the Art of Physical Therapy to both orthopedic and neurologic patient populations. The certification programs provide those who have completed the required course work with an opportunity to demonstrate that they have in fact reached a competency level of understanding, integrating, and applying the principles and procedures taught in The Institute curriculum.
The Certification week is held the first full week of August each summer in Steamboat Springs, CO, and is an intense 4 days of review (1/2 day per course) followed by 2 days of written and oral/practical testing. Following is the required course work:
| Functional Orthopedics I |
| Back Education and Training | | Functional Orthopedics II |
| Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation I | | Lumbo-Pelvic Integration |
| Functional Mobilization: Lower Quadrant | | Cervical Thoracic Integration |
| Functional Mobilization: Upper Quadrant |
In addition, applicants must complete one elective (PNF Gait and PNF II), or submit a case study, or perform a literature review.
FOC: Functional Orthopedic Certification The Functional Orthopedic Certification will prepare the therapist for a general orthopedic setting and requires the following courses:
| Back Education and Training |
| Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation I | | Functional Orthopedics I |
| Functional Orthopedics II | | plus any basic spinal mobilization course, i.e., LPI, CTI, Ola Grimsby, Maitland, Paris. |
Review and testing will be held each summer during the Certification week in Steamboat Springs, CO. This certification is open to Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, and Occupational Therapists. (PTs may apply FOC credit toward CFMT for up to three years.)
Registration Policies
Due to the time required to test each individual, the testing for CFMT is limited to 16 applicants per session. As a result of demand exceeding availability, we have adapted the following procedures in the pursuit of fairness:
Applications for both certifications will be accepted on an ongoing basis, we will accept applications via email or regular mail only. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETE IN ORDER FOR YOU TO ACCEPTED INTO THE CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS. You may apply for any upcoming year. If the year you are applyinhg for is full, please indicate whether you would like to be on the waiting list for that same year, or if you prefer to be moved to the following year's class. This would give you priority in your placement for the following year. You may also elect to be placed on the waiting list for the year you are applying and in the event you do not get in then be switched to a subsequent year, however if the following year is full you would be placed on the waiting list.
If you are a CFMT graduate and are interested in sitting in on any of the reviews for CFMT contact the office and make arrangements for this. There is a $100 per day charge for this. As always, all applications must include a $200 deposit. Payment in full is due by February 1st of your testing year. The cancellation policy is different than the regular courses because of the nature of the certification process.
Please download the application for CFMT or FOC. If you have further questions, please call 970-870-9521, or send an e-mail message to info@instituteofphysicalart.com. |
